Man pays property tax bill with coins dollar bills

On Behalf of | Aug 12, 2015 | Property Taxes

Many Georgia resident might find it difficult to deal with their taxes. In an apparent attempt to protest the required payments, two Pennsylvania residents took steps to demonstrate their displeasure with the system. The most recent case involved a Montgomery County resident who waited until the last moment to pay his property taxes. That person showed up with a wheelbarrow containing the $831 he owed in dollar bills and coins, including over 50,000 pennies.

The man’s plan had been to pay his entire property tax bill with 83,160 pennies, but amassing the coins turned out to be a challenge. The man is said to have visited 15 banks, but he only managed to collect about 50,000 of the coins. He then opened the rolls of coins into a wheelbarrow that he had purchased at an area hardware store.

Another Pennsylvania man made headlines for a similar stunt almost two years before the Montgomery County resident wheeled his pennies into a bank on July 31. The Forkes Township man wanted local officials to know that he considered property tax to be theft, and he paid his entire $7,143 tax bill with single dollar bills. He then posted a video of the whole event on YouTube.

Georgia residents with tax issues may not be aware that they may have a number of options available to them. While the IRS can sometimes seem inflexible, an attorney with experience in this area may be able to set up an installment plan, enroll taxpayers in the IRS Fresh Start Program, work with the IRS to have penalties removed or reduced, or have the tax owed reclassified as “currently not collectable.”
